Brief
To realise artists conception of a clear, inverted facsimile
of the granite Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square. Research,
design, engineering and fabrication of two moulds and core
moulds for casting. Materials development of a "Water
Clear" resin capable of withstanding the stresses of
such a large scale casting. Glass transition analysis. FEA
and material properties/structural analysis. Execution of
casting the two halves. Hydraulic control systems to allow
shrinkage of material during curing. Post production machining
of mating surfaces, travel frames, transport, installation.
Construction
Two aluminium moulds with cores, Steel external superstructure,
Steel internal core structure with hydraulic piston shrinkage
control system.

12.6 Tonne Water-Clear polyurethane resin, Cast urethane gaskets,
Steel, Aluminium
